他表示,中国扎实的STEM(科学、技术、工程与数学)教育为他打下了坚实基础。

Demystifying Quantum: A Conversation with NC State Professor Yuan Liu

■By Elizabeth Shen, 10th Grade, Green Hope High School

At a recent public talk, NC State professor Yuan Liu broke down the mysteries of quantum computing—what it is, why it matters, and how it might change the world. A leading voice in the field, Liu spoke with clarity and enthusiasm, making a notoriously complex topic feel just a little more within reach.

Born and raised in China, Liu earned his bachelor’s degree there before moving to the U.S. for graduate school, completing a Ph.D at Brown University. He credits China’s strong STEM education as giving him a solid foundation, and spoke on the challenges of adapting to a completely new culture in joining the American scientific community.

His journey into exploring the quantum advantage began in undergrad physics classes and deepened during his chemistry Ph.D., where he worked on simulating chemistry problems with classical computers. But he couldn’t solve the quantum problems. That changed after meeting a quantum computing pioneer at MIT, which sparked his transition to building a new research career in that field.

Liu is driven by the idea of applying quantum computers to real-world problems that matter to people. “That’s how we make them care,” he said. His goal is to move the field from abstract to impactful.

To students, especially those navigating life as immigrants in America, Liu offers this advice: “Speak out. Don’t be too modest. Be a bit more proactive and communicative with questions. Be bold and brave. That is how you make your place.”

In the end, Liu’s story is about more than just his research work. It’s about bridging cultures, challenging limits, and finding your voice in unfamiliar spaces. As science advances, it will need not just brilliant minds, but bold ones—and Liu is an excellent role-model for many upcoming innovators seeking to make their own impact in the scientific world.
